Why Spay or Neuter Your Dog?

I feel with all the unwanted dogs out there, and all the puppies and dogs that end up in shelters it is a really good idea to spay or neuter your pet. Most people just want a pet and for those people it only makes sense to spay or neuter your pet.

For all those people that think they would just like one litter to get their money back, this is a stupid idea. If you wanted a pet and you spent the money enjoy your pet. As a breeder myself there is lots of time and money spent to get the right lines of dogs. We look for temperament health and other genetic factors. People that just want to make a fast buck will in no way take the time to do what is needed to breed and produce the best they can for the breed. Good breeders will also only have so many litters a year and do their best to place their pups in the best homes possible.

Most breeders will also make puppy purchasers sign a no-breeding contract stating that they will not breed that pup or dog and that they will have he or she spayed or neutered. Also in most breeding program a female will only have so many litters and then spayed and placed in a forever home or in some cases the breeder will keep them.  Males in some cases may be used for breeding for many years. Good breeders, however,  will have them neutered as soon as the male is not needed for breeding or is too old.

Un-spayed Females

  • Come into heat at least twice a year and usually bleed for 10 days.
  • Very high chance of urinary infections
  • Risk of breast cancers
  • Also in older females better chance of reproductive cancers
  • Unspayed females will also mark just like a male
  • No unwanted puppies

Un-neutured Males

  • Good chance of testicle cancer
  • Marking everything in sight
  • They will roam, even dig a hole under your fence to get to a female in heat
  • They can also be aggressive with other male dogs

The health issues for a dog that has not been spayed or neutered is just not worth the risk to your pet. As for the cost of spaying or neutering I feel it is money well spent. It should never be an issue of money it should be about the well being of your dog. The cost will be a whole lot more if  your dog gets a urinary infection or cancer. So do your dog and the pet population a favor and spay or neuter your dog.
